Reasons for TMJ Treatment

If you recognize any TMJ symptoms, schedule an appointment with our office as soon as possible. During your appointment, one of our dentists will examine and feel along your jaw for abnormalities. We’ll also ask you to open and close your mouth so we can examine your bite and listen for clicking sounds that would indicate a TMJ disorder.

TMJ symptoms include:

  • Jaw pain
  • TMJ pain
  • Pain around your ear
  • Difficulty or pain while eating
  • Jaws locked in place while mouth is open or closed

Many of our patients find relief with a TMJ mouth guard, which helps hold the jaw in place while you sleep. Some TMJ disorders are caused by grinding teeth at night, which exerts pressure on your jaw and TMJ.

Surgery is a last resort if other TMJ pain treatment hasn’t worked. Depending on your unique circumstances, we may refer you to a TMJ specialist.
